Robotics

Learning about robotics was fun. Russ showed me how approachable the subject can be because, honestly, I had been a little nervous. I had never been exposed to anything like this.

Russ grabbed the attention of some kids in the library when he drove the remote controlled robot out there. It has a seat for a flip camera that takes videos while the robot is driving. The kids loved driving that thing and we played the video back to them so they could see themselves on it. I loved watching Russ interact with the kids. One boy wouldn’t even leave when his friends kept trying to get him to play football. It was great to see him so excited about the activity.

All of these training sessions have made me more confident about new technology and interacting with young people. I loved visiting ImaginOn. The atmosphere is so fun. I can’t wait to bring some of that back to the Davidson branch. Thanks everyone for teaching me so much. I’d especially like to thank Kelly for orchestrating the whole thing!

Popular Programs

This last week I learned about some of the programs that are popular with the teens at ImaginOn. I think the hardest thing to overcome will be the lack of technological resources at Davidson to use for these programs. But with creative thinking, I will be able to transfer these ideas over to Davidson, especially with the advantage of checking out the Mac and other equipment from the other branches. I like that there are free picture editing programs online that would be very easy for the kids to use, like Picnik. I’d also like to become more aquainted with the flip camera that we have. I haven’t used it very much yet. Whatever we do, I know it will be super fun!

I enjoyed sharing our many innovative technology programs with Karyn from the Davidson Branch. I believe the only way to stay on the cutting edge of the fast paced world of technology is to share amongst colleagues. I hope that she was able to get a few new ideas on programs to take back with her to Davidson.

Video Game Tech Exchange

It was so much fun having Karyn here at ImaginOn to talk about gaming. Not only did we get to discuss technical elements of the systems, but we also got to give Karen actual hands on time with the games. I now have some great expectations for gaming at Davidson!

Video Gaming

I became familiar with a number of video games that are popular at ImaginOn. I played games such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Animal Crossing, and Mortal Kombat. I also learned how to conquer the different gaming systems. I am now able to set them up and start them. I think the boys in our book club Guy-Time will like to play these games together. I want to bring RockBand back to the branch so the kids can rock out. The teens at Davidson are really good at it.

Christen was a great teacher and a worthy opponent. Thank you!

My shiny GarageBand CD

My first day at ImaginOn for the Exchange Program and it was a good one. Robin showed me around the GarageBand program and I mixed my own short track. I could have played with it all day, but sadly I had to leave after my two hours were up. I can definitely see the teens at Davidson having fun with GarageBand.

I even made “sounds” in the recording booth. I’m not very much of a singer, but Robin showed me up and sang a little bit. I saw the portable Mac and I think I’m in love.

A new approach

It was fun working with Catherine to prepare her for her film programs but I was really happy to be there at the final day before the big presentation and see what the kids did with it. It’s always fun to see new approaches to how we do things.

I hope she can get several of them to submit to the Film Festival in September.

I say, Congratulations to Catherine on a job well done.

I got to join the fun on the first session of the Digital Media & Animation Workshop, and what a blast it was! The kids really got into it! I was there to run the Portable Animation Station from ImaginOn’s Technology Education department, and it was just as big a hit as the other activities that Catherine had set up.

Techno Staff Exchange

I had a pleasant experience participating in the staff exchange program at Cornelius Branch. Catherine did an amazing job preparing the youth at Cornelius on how to use technology to express them-selves and to tell a story. Being able to work with youth at community branches is much more personal and intimate. This group of youth was really focused and well behaved. In the future, I hope to participate in the staff exchange program again in order to learn more about the environment and culture of our community branches. I hope others are afforded the opportunity to participate in the staff exchange program too. I believe this would also be a great way to link Unified Services amongst branches.

The first session of the Digital Media & Animation Workshop Series went smoothly and all 16 teens had a great time! 16 was the perfect number – the teens worked together using the Animation Station and worked to develop ideas that could be created at other sessions.

The Media Specialist from Bailey Middle, the public middle school in Cornelius, also dropped by to check out the workshop, see which kids from her AV Club attended and get some ideas to incorporate into her Media Center. We have a great partnership and we’d both love to collaborate on some technology programs in the upcoming school year.

The second session is this Saturday — stay tuned!
